Faces

Watercolor on Paper Cutout

This was originally thought to be a breakthrough for Francis. He could not easily recognize faces, but rather differentiated individuals through other senses. For a long time, many thought this to be his first successful attempt at doing a human portrait. In truth, this was indeed a portrait, but not of a face. It was intended to be the entire "essence" of The Mayor of the Town of Ducan. Francis did two versions, the first depicting his essence during the parade when Francis was held by the authorities, and the second depicting his coming to understand his errors. Both look strangely like faces, but Francis insists they are not.
