Paper Steeped in Watercolor at Various Intervals

Francis felt he could convey what the sky and ground looked to him first, since those things consumed much of our visual field, while they were just a sliver of his own periphery. Though he initially paid these things little attention, once he began to focus on these simple concepts of up and down, North and South, he became quite dizzy. These watercolor works on paper show his first attempts to show both the ground, the sea, and the sky, as well as the feeling that came over him while trying to orient himself to our three-dimensional landmarks. The result is an immersion in color, and a feeling of great drift or weightlessness. For Francis, there is no ground to be grounded to.
